Steps Forward, Design Rehab, Equipping for New Craft, and Design in Democracy – these are the four carefully curated themes of Design Matters 25. Curious to learn how these themes came to be?

Community first.

Design Matters opened a Call for Proposals for the first time – and the response was incredible. Over 250 submissions offered a glimpse into the minds of designers worldwide. The submissions were filled with fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, trend predictions, and bold visions for the future of design.

What makes this year’s four themes truly special is that they were crafted from the inspiration found in proposals from the design community. The result? Together with the DM25 Board, a group of six talented designers and former speakers  –  we reviewed, refined, and shaped these ideas into themes that inspire change, foster self-awareness, equip us for the future, and celebrate design’s transformative role in building a better, more inclusive world. These themes reflect not only the creativity of the design community but also its capacity to tackle complex challenges and envision impactful solutions.

Theme 1: Steps Forward

The design landscape is evolving faster than ever, and as designers we must rise to the challenge. Taking a seat where decisions are made isn’t just an opportunity; it’s a necessity. To drive real impact, we need to shift our mindset, work closely with stakeholders, and embrace the role of agents of change.

This theme focuses on how designers can step into leadership, influence decision-making, and harness the power of design as more than a tool – it’s a force for impact, value, and vision. At Design Matters 25, speakers will explore how we can lead the conversations that matter and design a future that reflects shared interests, bold innovation, and collective progress.

Theme 2: Design Rehab

In the fast-paced world of design, it’s easy to get trapped in a cycle of endless deadlines, deliverables, and the relentless pressure to constantly innovate. But what if we allowed ourselves to pause?

Design Rehab offers a space to reflect on personal strengths, reconnect with intrinsic motivation, and confront the burnout that so many in the industry face. By taking a break, we create space to reignite the creativity that drives meaningful work, restoring clarity, resilience, and purpose to approach design with renewed energy. This theme isn’t just about self-care; it’s about embracing a way of working that prioritises well-being and fosters sustainable creativity. When we take time to recharge, we’re better equipped to create meaningful work that has a lasting impact.

Theme 3: Equipping New Craft

How do designers gear up for the design era of intelligence? This theme dives into the designer’s toolbox, examining how we can equip ourselves for tomorrow.

With a focus on practical skills and innovative approaches, speakers will share their perspective on mastering emerging technologies, adopting fresh processes, and unlearning outdated practices – empowering designers to embrace change and seize the opportunities of tomorrow. Equipping New Craft is about arming yourself with the right tools and adaptability to navigate the challenges ahead. It’s a call to action for designers to rethink their methods, embrace continuous learning, and innovate to stay ahead in a world that’s constantly evolving.

Theme 4: Design in Democracy

Design has always been a force for empowerment, community-building, and societal progress. Guest-curated by Kontrapunkt, this theme invites designers to reflect on design’s legacy and its impact on democracy. By looking back, we can better understand the ways in which design has shaped the world- and how it can continue to do so in the future.

Speakers will share their perspectives on how design disciplines have influenced democratic principles, strengthened communities, and driven inclusivity. Through this exploration, we’ll find inspiration to build a better, more equitable future – a powerful reminder that the lessons of the past can guide us in creating a more inclusive and impactful future.

The power of the community

The process of crafting this year’s themes reminds us that great design – like great ideas – is rarely the work of one individual. It is the result of many voices coming together to create something greater. The positive response from the design community already affirms their relevance and impact, reflecting the shared interests and values of the design world. A big thank you goes to everyone who contributed their ideas, creativity, and perspectives to help shape the foundation of Design Matters 25.
